On March 13, Bashkortostan capital Ufa officially launched the Zaton CHP (combined heat and power plant; formerly, CHP No. 5). The Kaskad holding company (part of Tashir Group) was the prime contractor for the project. A total of 22 billion rubles was invested in the project.

The 440 MW plant is one of the most powerful and modern CHPs, generating 290 Gcal/hr. The official opening ceremony was attended by Head of Bashkortostan Rustem Khamitov, Inter RAO CEO Boris Kovalchuk, Kaskad CEO Igor Bulatov and other officials.

In 2015, Kaskad won in open negotiations between competitors and was picked to finish the construction of the combined cycle gas turbine for the Zaton CHP in Ufa. Kaskad performed the full range of construction works on the plant, which includes the main building, the administrative building, the startup boiler, the auxiliary building for labs and repair shops, a number of passageways, cooling towers, gas distribution systems, pump stations and pipes.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Inter RAO CEO Boris Kovalchuk said, “The launch of the Zaton CHP will help Bashkortostan increase its generation by 10 percent. This is the biggest power plant built since the 1970s”

Kaskad CEO Igor Bulatov said, “We felt confident embarking on such a big project. This plant will not only provide a boost to Zaton; it is important for the entire Republic of Bashkortostan. It is one of the biggest CHP projects in modern Russia”

The Zaton CHP is extremely important to the city and the entire republic. It will generate both electricity and heat for Zaton, one of Ufa’s most dynamic neighborhoods. The project created 250 new jobs. Also, the Zaton CHP will provide heating for the future borough of Zabelye, and will also facilitate the creation of new production facilities in the area.
